TCC Academy for Nonprofit Excellence wins national award

A Tidewater Community College program tailored to meet the training needs of those who lead nonprofit organizations is the winner of an award from the National Council on Workforce Education.

The TCC Academy for Nonprofit Excellence received a 2013 Exemplary Program Award during the council’s annual meeting Oct. 14-16 in Milwaukee.

The noncredit academy, which is supported by a grant from the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, “serves as a viable example of providing training for results-oriented skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century,” according to the council.

Since its inception in 2005, the academy has served more than 1,100 people from more than 450 agencies. Certificate completion requires one continuing education unit (CEU) in each of five subject areas:

law, ethics and advocacy;
governance and leadership;
development and communication;
financial management; and
human resources management.

“Nonprofit organizations across the U.S. face an increasingly complex climate that calls for continuing development of leadership and management skills,” Theresa Bryant, TCC vice president for Workforce Solutions said. “Our program has continued to grow, so obviously it’s much needed.”

During the meeting, Lillian Bailey, founding director of the academy who retired in 2012, was recognized. The academy’s new coordinator is Lisa Peterson.
