TCC announces special outreach to former ITT Tech students

Tidewater Community College is mobilizing to help students whose education was disrupted by the closure this week of ITT Technical Institute’s Norfolk campus.

TCC will host a special information session for ITT Tech students on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon on its Norfolk Campus. The session will be held in the Andrews Science Building at 315 Granby St.

Details are at tcc.edu/itt2tcc. Parking in the MacArthur Center North garage will be free for anyone attending the session.

“It’s a sad day when any educational institution closes its doors,” TCC President Edna V. Baehre-Kolovani said. “The students are undoubtedly angry and confused about their options.

“TCC will do everything it can to help them continue on their higher education journey.”

At the info session, TCC staff representing admission, financial aid and academic advising – as well as the Center for Military and Veterans Education and Center for Workforce Solutions – will be on hand to answer questions and talk to students about their goals, where they are in their programs, transferability of credits, and their financial aid status.

Twelve-week classes at TCC begin Sept. 12 – the same day ITT Tech’s fall quarter would have begun. TCC also offers 8-week classes beginning Oct. 19 and a variety of shorter term courses through its “dynamic schedule.”

Students have been told by ITT Tech that they may have difficulty transferring their credits to another institution. President Kolovani said TCC will look at each student’s record individually and determine the transfer scenario that will work best.

Another option is for students to attain industry-certified credentials through short-term training programs at the Center for Workforce Solutions.

Anyone planning to attend Saturday’s information session should bring:

Photo ID
Any ITT Tech academic records, including official and unofficial transcripts
List of courses taken at ITT Tech, including syllabi and/or course descriptions if available
For those using the GI Bill, the DD-214, which details one’s military service, and Veterans Administration Certificate of Eligibility. Veterans should also bring a copy of their Joint Services Transcript (JST).
