TCC decorated with multiple honors for being a top school for military-related students
TCC ranked 12th nationally among two-year schools in the Best for Vets: Colleges 2017 rankings released by Military Times on Nov. 1. The editorially independent news project evaluates the factors that make colleges and universities a good fit for service members, military veterans and their families.
TCC also earned designation as a Top School by Military Advanced Education and Transition (MAE&T) in its 2017 Guide to Colleges and Universities.
MAE&T is the journal of higher education for service members and veterans making the transition from military to the civilian sector.
TCC serves the largest military-related student population in Virginia. Active-duty, military reserves, National Guard, veterans and their families make up about one-third of the college’s enrollment.
“Our mission is serving military, veterans and their families every day,” said Cal Scheidt, director of military contract programs at TCC’s Center for Military and Veterans Education, which provides consolidated student services for military-related students on each campus.
“We are committed to providing education and career transition training and support for those who served our nation.”
More than 500 colleges took part in the detailed Military Times survey, which measured an array of services, including special rules, academic outcomes, financial incentives offered to students with military ties and aspects of military culture on campus.
The MAE&T guide measures best practices in military and veterans education by evaluating military culture, financial aid, flexibility, general support, on-campus support and online support services.
To be included in the 2017 MAE&T Guide to Top Colleges & Universities, institutions had to complete a comprehensive questionnaire regarding the school’s military support policy. More than 600 institutions, including community colleges, state universities and nationally known centers of higher learning, completed surveys that led to the results.
The guide can be found online and in the December issue of Military Advanced Education & Transition.
