“International Women” featured at TCC’s Visual Arts Center

The exhibition “International Women” will open at Tidewater Community College’s Visual Arts Center on Sept. 16.

The opening reception will be Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m.

Events are free and open to the public. The exhibition continues through Nov. 2.

“International Women” features diverse collections of work by four international female artists.

Regula Franz from Basil, Switzerland, is a documentary photographer who has traveled to some of the most remote and meditative places around the globe, particularly Southeast Asia. The Virginia Commonwealth University educator seeks to discover cultures and landscapes that remain untouched by industrial development in order to capture their purest energy and spirituality.

Painter Kang Joo Lee explores the literal and metaphorical passing of time in her colorful large-scale paintings. The Seoul, Korea, native and art teacher redefines form and perspective through various artistic processes, such as screen printing and collage. The resulting abstract works combine illusionistic space, artificial landscape forms and past environments.

Portuguese mixed media artist and literary scholar Manuela Mourão investigates the historical and cultural meanings attached to the nun. Through two- and three-dimensional media, the artist studies traditional stereotypes and transforms them into provocative images that stimulate new interpretation and dialogue.

The ceramic work by Tokyo’s Akiko Tanaka blends traditional Japanese hand-building and modern influences. The artist, who divides her time between Japan and the United States, combines organic shapes and varied textures. Delicate wire and small objects are added to create unique and captivating animal and plant forms.
