TCC Celebrates Black History Month 2018

Tidewater Community College celebrates Black History Month 2018 with an inaugural half-day conference, TCC 360: A Dialogue on Black Life and Legacies, on Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Norfolk Campus Student Center.

Participants will explore the identities of the African-American male in American culture by examining self-identification, media representation, current events, history and politics. The event will be presented by TCC’s Intercultural Learning Center.

The day will include breakout sessions and a keynote address by Vernon J. Hurte, associate vice president and dean of students at Iowa State University. Hurte formerly directed the Center for Student Diversity at the College of William & Mary. He was senior pastor of the historic New Light Baptist Church in Richmond for nearly a decade.

The national theme for Black History Month is “African Americans in Times of War,” which commemorates the centennial of the end of World War I in 1918 and explores the meanings and implications of its aftermath.

The month includes an assortment of free, public activities throughout February with speakers, discussions and entertainment at each of TCC’s campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.
