TCC veterinary technology program starting this fall will be lone one in Hampton Roads

Tidewater Community College will start a veterinary technology program for Fall Semester 2018 that will be the first in Hampton Roads.

Students who enjoy animals and science can pursue an Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology, a 63-credit program that can be completed in four semesters and two summer sessions. Classes will meet in the evening, twice weekly, on the Virginia Beach Campus. In addition, students will receive hands-on training with equines, cattle and exotic animals, all at local sites.

The need for veterinary technicians is anticipated to grow by 60 percent in TCC’s service region in the next decade, according to EMSI, an economic indicator for higher education.

“Over the past 20 years, veterinary medicine has become increasingly complex and fast-paced, which has resulted in a strong demand for well-educated, licensed veterinary technicians,” said Megan Taliaferro, program director. “Due to this high demand, Virginia is currently experiencing a state-wide shortage of veterinary technicians. TCC’s program is not only an exciting opportunity for students who have an interest in the field, but it will also benefit the local veterinary industry and ultimately, the pets and pet owners in the Hampton Roads community.”

The TCC program is one of three in the state and the only one in Hampton Roads.

Veterinary technicians assist veterinarians in diagnosing and treating animals. Their duties include working with veterinarians during examinations and surgeries, conducting routine procedures, such as immunizations and dental cleanings, and educating pet owners about the health care of animals.

Graduates will be prepared for employment in a multitude of settings, ranging from animal, equine and food animal practices; biomedical research facilities; pharmaceutical companies; zoos; and specialty and emergency practices.

The program is geared toward those with some experience in the veterinary field. Those who haven’t worked in a professional setting can gain experience by completing TCC’s 17-credit Career Studies Certificate in Veterinary Assistant.

TCC will host an open house for prospective veterinary technology students on Feb. 21 from 7-10 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Campus Student Center, Room K-219. RSVP at tcc.edu/vet-tech-rsvp.
