Summer dynamic classes available for high school juniors and seniors

Victoria Parrish, 17, is on the fast track to starting her college career. Dual enrolled this summer for SDV 100, Parrish, a rising senior at Grassfield High School, will be on campus taking a dynamic class, the first toward her associate degree in science.

“I’m really excited to get started,” Parrish says. “I’ve always known that college was my future, but I want to start at TCC so I have the support of my parents, instead of going off to larger university right away.”

Parrish will take two English classes during her senior year, and then begin full time at Tidewater Community College in fall of 2014.

“My goal is to become a forensic anthropologist and discover how people used to live. I initially thought about medicine, but I’m too afraid that I’ll hurt a live person, so this works for me,” Parrish says.

Parrish plans to transfer to University of North Carolina at Charlotte. “Plenty of my friends are coming to TCC to start, so it will be like having some of my high school family there with me,” she adds.

Parrish is following in the footsteps of her mom, Kim, and brother, Dalton, who also started at TCC. “I came to TCC because I needed a math credit before I could be considered for acceptance at Radford,” explained Kim Parrish. “As a Navy family, we moved quite a bit, and that one class was the missing link between me and college.” Kim Parrish went on to graduate from Radford and now works as a customer coordinator for a trucking company.

Dalton Parrish, 22, earned his associate degree at TCC’s Regional Automotive Centerto prepare for a career as a diesel mechanic. He now works for TFC Recycling Co., maintaining the trucks and work vehicles.

“TCC is such a great starting place for post high school education,” Kim Parrish says. “Whether you are preparing for university or a career, it’s an affordable option that really can take you places.”
