TCC celebrates Women’s History Month 2016

Keynote speaker Sandra Kim will share her journey of starting Everyday Feminism on March 22 at 12:30 p.m. in the Virginia Beach Campus Student Center, room K-320. Launched in June 2012, Everyday Feminism has become one of the most popular feminist digital media sites in the world, with a readership of 4.5 million monthly visitors from over 200 countries and a team of over 40 writers.

Prior to Everyday Feminism, Kim worked in the nonprofit arena and volunteered to work with sexual assault survivors, intimate partner violence survivors, and youth involved with gang-related activities.

Writing Women Back Into History

Visit with staffers and view a display of famous women throughout history. Students will be given handouts encouraging them to record their stories and capture oral histories of the women in their families in an effort to “write women back into history.”

Panel Discussion: Gaming While Female: Press Start at Your Own Risk
Noon – 1 p.m. – Virginia Beach Campus Student Center, Room K-304
Join the conversation about gaming and women. The panel will examine both the representations of women and girls in video games, and the ways in which female gamers are routinely mistreated by the largely male dominated gaming community. The panel will examine “Fake Geek Girls” as a concept, sexual harassment experienced by female gamers both online/in-game and at conventions. Moderating the panel will be an Old Dominion University Women’s Studies student as part of her Capstone Project.

Film Screening: “Miss Representation”

This film explores the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence, and challenge’s the media’s limited portrayal of what it means to be a powerful woman.

Join us as we listen to women tell their personal stories in back-to-back screenings of the following films: “Girl Rising,” “A Powerful Noise,” and “Half the Sky.”

“Girl Rising” journeys around the globe to witness the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world. Viewers get to know nine unforgettable girls living in the developing world. These are ordinary girls who confront tremendous challenges and overcome nearly impossible odds to pursue their dreams. Prize-winning authors put the girls’ remarkable stories into words, and renowned actors give them voice. 

“A Powerful Noise” follows three extraordinary women – in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Mali, and Vietnam – as they lead day-to-day battles against ignorance, poverty, oppression and ethnic strife.

“Half the Sky” is a passionate call-to-arms, urging us not only to bear witness to the plight of women around the world, but to help to transform oppression into opportunity.

Film Screening: “Chisholm ‘72: Unbought & Unbossed”

This film depicts pioneering politician Shirley Chisholm, the nation’s first African-American congresswoman, as she launches a campaign for the United States presidency in 1972 and earns an impressive amount of support, given the era and the still-prevailing prejudices of many voters.

Film Screening: “Suffragette”
12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. – Virginia Beach Campus Student Center, 2nd Floor, Movie Lounge
In early 20th-century Britain, the growing suffragette movement forever changes the life of working wife and mother Maud Watts. Galvanized by political activist Emmeline Pankhurst, Watts joins a diverse group of women who fight for equality and the right to vote.
