TCC partners with NSU to recruit inaugural CyberCorps scholar

Tidewater Community College is partnering with Norfolk State University to recruit the inaugural student for a three-year cybersecurity scholarship worth more than $100,000.

The CyberCorps Scholarship for Service program, funded by National Science Foundation, covers:

$22,500 living expense stipend
Tuition and fees for the last three years of study for a bachelor’s degree
Book allowance
Health insurance allowance
Fees to cover conferences and activities
Travel allowance

The scholarship is earmarked for TCC students earning the Career Studies Certificate in Cyber Security and on track to graduate in May 2017. Students studying Information Systems Technology are also encouraged to apply.

The initial scholarship will fund one student with plans to pursue a bachelor of science in computer science with an emphasis in information assurance at NSU. After graduating from NSU, the student is required to give service to a branch of government for three years.

To be eligible, a student must

be a Virginia resident;
be a full-time TCC student, taking a least 12 credits per semester;
be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
have at least a 3.2 grade point average.

“As the need for trained cybersecurity professionals skyrockets, it’s our hope that this scholarship will grow significantly and be offered to more and more students,” said Robert Guess, TCC’s Cyber Center director.

In May, Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced that TCC is the latest Virginia institution to be named a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE2Y) by the United States National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

TCC is one of 10 institutions nationwide to receive funding for this CAE2Y to 4Y scholarship initiative.
