TCC’s veterinary assistant program earns national approval

Tidewater Community College’s new veterinary assistant program has received approval from the National Association of Veterinary Technicians (NAVTA).

The approval qualifies graduates to sit for the Approved Veterinary Assistant (AVA) exam. The AVA credential is recognized by both NAVTA and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

“The veterinary community in Hampton Roads required a quality program,” said Daniel DeMarte, TCC’s vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer. “TCC answered the call by starting this program and now earning the stamp of approval from NAVTA.”

Currently, only 32 veterinary assistant programs in the nation are NAVTA-approved.

TCC started its program in Spring 2016 and will graduate its inaugural class of 15 this December.

Seven of those students, said program head Megan Taliaferro, have already been hired by local veterinarians. Veterinary assistant positions increased 220 percent from 2008-13.

TCC’s 17-credit, two-semester Career Studies Certificate in Veterinary Assistant prepares students to assist and support licensed veterinary technicians and veterinarians in the health and handling of small domestic animals and exotic species.

Students receive hands-on practice in labs and through internship opportunities.
