TCC’s EMS program will prepare you to serve on the front lines of health care. Graduates work in areas such as hospitals, fire and rescue departments, military, volunteer services, nursing homes, sports organizations, cruise ship lines, and other fields that require emergency services. Aspiring doctors, nurses, physician assistants, and other medical professionals can also gain valuable clinical experience through TCC’s EMS program.

Associate of Applied Science - Emergency Medical Services

The EMS associate degree provides individuals with the skills and expertise to deliver advanced emergency medical care as a paramedic for critical and emergency patients. You can achieve this degree in several steps. Course work qualifies students to sit for one or more exams administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), the American Heart Association, and more!

Career Studies Certificate - Critical Care

This program is available to registered nurses and paramedics who wish to enhance their training in patient critical care in a hospital setting or during a high-risk ground or flight transfer. Upon completion of the certificate, nurses may take the Critical Care Nurses Exam (CCRN) and paramedics may take the Flight Paramedic or Critical Care Transport exam as added credentials in their work.

Career Studies Certificate - Emergency Medical Service/Emergency Medical Training

The Career Studies Certificate in Emergency Medical Service/Emergency Medical Technician (EMS/EMT) prepares students to sit for the EMS Certification examination. Upon completion, students will also have the required CPR certification for entry to an EMT program in Virginia.

CAAHEP Accredited Paramedic Programs and CoAEMSP Letter of Review (LoR) Programs track and report outcome measures annually to the Committee on Accreditation for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). The most current CoAEMSP Annual Report was for the calendar year 2021.

The most recent success rate for the National Registry of EMT Paramedic/State Cognitive exam was 89.3%.

The most recent positive placement rate for graduates was 89.3%. Positive placement is defined by the CoAEMSP as ‘Employed full or part-time in a related field and/or continuing his/her education and/or serving in the military”. Positive placement is measured at completion of the program. The most recent retention rate was 100%.

Critical Care

This program is available to registered nurses and paramedics who wish to enhance their training in patient critical care.

TCC offers the following EMS training and programs:

  • EMT
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, which is only taught on agency contract basis at this time
  • Paramedic

No. RN, RT, Corpsman, PAs, MDs, etc., are not eligible for advanced standing in the EMS classes at this time.

BLS and ALS refreshers are available for all levels. They are usually scheduled in January and March, but can be contracted by interested groups by calling 757-822-7335 for details.

This program prepares students to sit for professional exams and/or apply for professional licensure that is required for employment in the related occupation in Virginia.
